Welcome to Carteret County, North Carolina!
Carteret County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population was 59,383. Its county seat is Beaufort. Most of the county is part of the Crystal Coast. The county was named for John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville.
A Brief History of Carteret County
The first male of English parents born in the current area of North Carolina was John Fulford. He was born in 1629 in what is now Carteret County, North Carolina. He settled in this area and died in 1729. An article dated Sept. 18, 1893, in The New Bern Daily Journal, identified Fulford's grave in a cemetery outside Beaufort, NC, in an area called the Straits, “bricked up with English brick.” In 1971 a survey by the Carteret County Historical Society found such a grave in the Fulford Cemetery off Piper Lane in Gloucester. No signs of it remain today.

School system sets standard of excellence
Educational excellence is more than a goal in the Carteret County Public School System – it is the standard. And that standard of excellence is reached by professional faculty and staff delivering a rigorous and relevant curriculum to students, while building caring relationships.
Students across the grades continue to achieve high academic scores and rank among the top school systems in the state for performance and proficiency.
“Our faculty and staff are committed to creating opportunities for all students to do their best and to succeed,” Superintendent Brad Sneeden said. “As a school system and as a community, we have high expectations for students and employees, and we continually work to have open communications, sound fiscal management and strong family and community involvement.”
Sneeden said Carteret County students are excelling academically as well as in the arts, sports, debate, drama and all types of extracurricular activities.
“These successes occur because of the broad-based support our students and employees receive from community members, parents, business leaders and elected officials,” he added.
Stakeholders demonstrated that support by recently approving $50 million in school bonds to provide new classroom construction and make needed renovations. Several of these projects have been completed and work is well under way on others.
“With continued stakeholder support, we can, and will, lead our children to success and create a stronger community,” the superintendent said.
