Welcome to Newport, North Carolina!
The town of Newport is located on the East Coast of North Carolina. It is in Carteret County, on the banks of the Newport River. The town is adjacent to, and northwest of Morehead City, on US Hi-way 70. Havelock and Cherry Point are just a few minutes to the east of Newport.
Newport is growing with new housing developments and prices lower than the Morehead City, Cape Cartert area of Carteret Couny. At the same time Morehead City is getting closer to Newport every day. Newport is a good place to buy real estate if you want to be close to the beach, but not pay "beach" prices.
Newport is home to the largest "whole hog" pig cookin' contest in N.C. This social and charitable event occurs in April.
The town government operates as a council-manager form of government with a mayor, a town manager, and a five-member town council. The mayor of Newport, Derryl Garner, has served since 1978 and is active with the North Carolina League of Municipalities, the Morehead City Ports Committee and numerous other civic and governmental organizations. David Heath, Frank Blunt,Ken Davis, Richard Kanuck and Eric Lindblade serve as town councilmen.
The town is protected by a volunteer fire department, founded in the 1940s by the late Leon Mann, Jr. The department also provides emergency medical and ambulance services. Newport also has it's own police department.
On the Hwy 70 by-pass you'll find, Food Lion, a pizza store, Subway, Bojangles, banks and other businesses.
The neighbors of Newport take great pride in their town and always seem to have something going on like the Pig Cookin, a Fall festival, Little League baseball, parades and all the things that makes living in a small town good.
Public schools in Newport include Newport Elementary School and Newport Middle School. Newport Consolidated School, a 1st-through-12th-grade school established in 1926, was demolished in 1966 after the county completed construction of a new consolidated high school, West Carteret High in nearby Morehead City. Members of the Newport Consolidated School Alumni Association operate a small school museum in a depot warehouse owned by the North Carolina Railroad in Newport.
